On April 12, the Society of Women Engineers at NJIT hosted a “Wow! That’s Engineering” outreach event titled “Innovation through Imagination”. NJIT SWE was awarded a grant by ExxonMobil through the nation SWE grant competition for K-12 outreach programs. This event hosted 55 students from the seventh grade class of the Newark Early College High School (NECHS) and six of their chaperones. SWE volunteers helped students engage in many STEM related projects which were aimed to promote different disciplines of engineering such as computer, aeronautical, electrical, mechanical, and biomedical engineering.
Some projects that students worked on together with their classmates were building their own moon habitat, flashlight, robotic arm and much more. This event was a great success; many students enjoyed the projects they worked on and expressed their interest in engineering or science! We look forward to hosting another “Wow! That’s Engineering” outreach this year and to continue on promoting engineering to many young girls!
