NJIT SWE launched a Mentoring Program on November 15, 2012 in collaboration with the Newark College of Engineering (NCE). Both SWE and NCE share a similar goal of increasing the enrollement and retention of women students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields at NJIT. The SWE-NCE Mentorship Program has created a network between undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and industry partners. Here is the mentoring structure:
Our industry mentors belong to companies such as Deloitt, ExxonMobil, Alcatel Lucent, Bristol Meyer’s Squibb, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Boeing, Paramount Pictures, and FM Global. Students reported that they received critical career guidance which helped them obtaining research opportunities, internships and full time jobs. The SWE+NCE Mentoring Program is the only program at NJIT which brings people from different stages in their careers in the same group, which can explain why it was a huge success!
With the continued support of NCE, interest from students and mentors, NJIT SWE will continue to conduct this event annually in the future and to continue our efforts to help women students on campus. We are looking forward to growing this program and encouraging more women students to pursue their careers in engineering!
